Main themes
The course covers every day and familiar topics such as: moving house, asking the way, going to the doctor's, talking about holidays.

Course activities cover the following:
  • Construction of grammatically correct sentences (orally and in writing)
  • Exercises on new vocabulary in class
  • Comprehension of a video conversation between Chinese people
  • Group discussion on everyday topics
  • Reading long texts on everyday topics
  • Reading aloud short texts
  • Development of vocabulary of synonyms and antonyms
  • Talking and writing about an event in the past
  • Creating short talks

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

By the end of the course, the student should have acquired:
  • A knowledge of +/- 900 ideograms plus a passive knowledge of others
  • Essential and complex grammar structures
  • An extensive vocabulary
  • The ability to understand conversations and texts on current topics
  • The ability to write small texts
  • The ability to translate sentences with precise grammatical points
  • A greater ability to talk about their studies and everyday life
 
Content
This course aims to continue the development of vocabulary and the knowledge of essential and some complex grammatical structures. Learning these grammar points enables the student to tackle more challenging reading, to understand the language better and to speak with greater ease about studies and daily life.
Teaching methods
Audiovisual method
Each lesson comprises a mini-scenario presenting the theme of the lesson and the grammar. The lessons also include listening comprehensions of increasing speed.
The grammar point covered are complex and essential for understanding more challenging texts and conversations.

Each 4-hour lesson is made up as follows:
  • 50% oral,
  • 50% written work.
  • Active learning and memorization of Chinese characters has to be done at home.
Evaluation methods
1. Test Q1
  • Written (12 points): 2 online Unit quizzes + 1 written test at the end of Q1
  • Oral (8 points): 1 in-class oral presentation on one of the given topics (8-10 min.)
2. Test Q2
  • Written (12 points): 2 online unit quizzes + 1 written test at the end of Q2
  • Oral (8 points): 1 in-class oral presentation on one of the given topics (10-15 min.)
3. Attendance: Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes (minimum 32 hours). In case of absence, please inform the teacher by e-mail.
4. Learners are required to attend the written AND oral evaluation test.
  • If you are unable to take the Q1 tests on the scheduled dates for professional or medical reasons, please inform your teacher in writing as soon as possible, giving reasons for your absence. You will be invited to take an early test during the 13th week of Q1. If you are unavailable for the early test, your course will be considered incomplete.
  • If you are unable to take the Q2 tests on the scheduled dates for professional or medical reasons, you will be invited to take a test during the first week of the 3rd exam session. If you are unavailable for this test, your course will be considered incomplete.
5. You must obtain a total of 10/20 pts or more to be admitted to the next level course.
Other information
  • The teacher can be consulted during her office hours during the whole academic year.
  • Non-UCL students who take the end-of-year exam may ask for an ILV certificate.
  • HSK Level 3 of the "Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education" implemented on July 1st, 2021 .
