Main themes
The course gives a detailed analysis of European Union rules and case law relating to free movement of workers, citizens, goods, capital, services, including a study of the European policy of approximation of national legislations, as well as an overview on competition rules. The case law of the European Court of Justice plays is commonly used.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Through the study of the free movement regimes, of the rules on competition and on services of general interest in the internal market, the student will get the understanding of mechanisms governing substantive Community law.
 
Content
The course sets out a synthesis of the legal framework of the EU internal market.
- the various freedoms of movement, i.e. the movement of goods, services, people (workers and citizens), companies and capital. The analysis covers the practical scope of the regime of obstacles to the freedom of movement as well as the transversal notions of the internal market in the case law of the Court of Justice.
- the principles of harmonisation/approach of the national legislations of the Member States in the Internal Market in the different sectors
- Competition law (including State aid rules) is also covered in general terms.
Teaching methods
The course favours a synthetic approach, while illustrating the concepts through the case-law of the ECJ. The course is taught in the form of lectures. Students have Powerpoint presentations and a case-law compendium at their disposal.
- Practical sessions introduce the method of applying internal market rules to practical cases.
- Lectures use Powerpoint presentations as well as a collection of documents provided at the beginning of the semester.

Oral examination (15 points)

Support: case law and secondary law referred to during the lectures, and the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union.
