Content
"Sociology wouldn't be worth the effort if it didn't enable us to influence the social world (which implies a thorough understanding of it!)."
In this context, sociology of social intervention can be understood as:
  • Sociology of the various types and modalities of social intervention implemented in various fields of social action, aiming at goals such as "social cohesion," "prevention," "integration," "activation," "participation," and more.
  • Sociology as a practice of social intervention: how (using what analytical tools, methodological approaches, and professional stance) can a sociologist intervene, either directly or in support of stakeholders (decision-makers, managers, social workers in the broadest sense).
The course draws on numerous research and ongoing interventions conducted in various fields of social action, primarily in Belgium but also in Africa and Latin America.
Teaching methods
The course will alternate between:
  • Sessions led by the instructor: covering concepts, methodological approaches, and the results of research and interventions in various fields of social and educational action.
  • Inductive sessions starting from problem situations, empirical materials, social demands, and calls for proposals issued by public authorities.
As this is a participatory course that will partly rely on problem-solving, student attendance and participation are required. Attendance is mandatory. In case of an impediment, it is requested to notify the instructor in advance at the following address: abraham.franssen@uclouvain.be
If necessary, students will be asked to prepare for the session by reading and analyzing provided texts and research and intervention materials (reference framework for integration and activation devices, case presentations, interviews with professionals and users, specifications, etc.).
Evaluation methods
The assessment will be based on course participation (in-session exercises) and the completion of a written assignment (approximately twenty pages). Students will be required to individually carry out evaluative analysis and/or prospective development of a social intervention scheme. The analyzed situations can be related to the internship field.
Aligned with the categories of analysis and questioning covered in the course, the assignment may focus on the entirety or a specific aspect of the intervention scheme (networking, the role of professionals, user experiences, etc.).
The topic of the assignment must be approved by the instructor.
During a collective session within the semester, students will orally present their work for critical discussion and formative evaluation.
