Main themes
The course covers the understanding and implementation of formulation principles and drug manufacture in industry and community pharmacy. The course is divided in 2 parts (WFARM2156 et 2157) and includes practical training.
The course aims at integrating the physicochemical bases necessary for the formulation and the manufacture of pharmaceutical dosage forms. The formulation of various pharmaceutical dosage forms including the role of excipients, the manufacture and their control will be discussed.

Content
For the theoretical part, the course will cover dispersed forms (suspensions and emulsions), dermatological preparations, rectal preparations, ophthalmic preparations, transdermal drug delivery systems and preparations for pulmonary and nasal use. The definition and relevance of the pharmaceutical forms described in the European Pharmacopoeia, the principles of their formulation, the main excipients used, the methods of manufacture in industry and community pharmacy and the controls described in the pharmacopoeia will be addressed.
For the practical work, students will prepare out-of-class exercises dealing with prescriptions. They will manufacture dosage forms made in community pharmacy: capsules, liquids for oral use, dermatological preparations, suppositories, eye-drops.

The course will be given using new teaching methods to complement the lecture (active teaching and flipped classes). Continuous assessment (1 partial) in addition to the exam

Evaluation methods
The assessment consists of two parts:
- Practical work (50% of final grade).
Continuous assessment of magistral preparations in 2 stages (training (50%) then assessment (50%)) with knowledge test at the start of each session, assessment of preparations and associated report. In the event of a 2nd session, the grade obtained in the training sessions will be unchanged.
- Course-related assessment (50% of final grade): this consists of
* a Part A continuous assessment (10% of the subject assessment)
* Part B, consisting of the in-session written examination. (90% of subject assessment)
By completing various non-compulsory activities, students can earn a bonus point which will be added to their final mark for the 2nd term. Attendance at both continuous assessment and examination sessions is compulsory. Any unjustified absence will result in a mark of 0/20. Points acquired during the term will not change and will be taken into account as they are in the final mark of any second session.
The final grade will be made up of 2 integrated parts (theoretical and practical training). Successful completion of these two parts is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge defined in the learning outcomes of the teaching unit. The EU will be validated by passing each part of the assessment. Each part passed will be acquired. A second session for the practical part will be organized after the practical work (out of session) in order to guarantee pedagogical coherence, while the second session for the theoretical part will be organized in session.
