Main themes
The course offers a thematic journey through some of the major works of Spanish literature of the 16th, 17th, 20th and 21st centuries in the light of the idea of crisis, viewed at one and the same time from a perspective that is historical and social as well as literary.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- situate within their historical, social and literary context the works and literary currents covered in the course;
- analyse extracts from the works in question in a rigorous way
- deal in a critical and informed way with the theoretical development of key concepts from the course, such as that of ¿crisis¿

1. Modernity as crisis in the Tragicomedia de Calixto y Melibea
2. Grandeur and decadence of the Spanish Empire. Writing and survival in El Lazarillo de Tormes. Writing and utopia in El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha.
3. The literature of the 'disaster' of 1898. Unamuno et Machado.
5 . Spanish poetry and the crisis of 1929: Poeta en Nueva York (F. García Lorca).
6. Writing and censorship in Francoist Spain. The theatre of Antonio Buero Vallejo and the narrative oeuvre of R.J. Sender.
7. The transition to democracy and the crime novel (Vázquez Montalbán).
8. The crisis of 2007 and the novel (Pablo Gutiérrez)
