Main themes
The first part of the course will outline the panorama of historical conditions in which the social and cultural life of Spain developed: the medieval mosaic; the presence of three cultures (Christian, Arab and Jewish); unification at the end of the 15th century. The second part concerns the emergence of modern Spain. The accent will be on the mechanisms of the globalisation of Spanish power (main stages in the conquest of the Americas and mechanisms of control), as well as on the politico-religious dimension of the Hispanic monarchy, as it expressed itself, notably, in Flanders.
As far as possible the course will be based on visual, historical and literary documentation.
 
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Students will be able to contextualise, historically and culturally, the literary and visual documents of the Hispanic world, in a period ranging from the 13th to the 17th centuries.

Content
This course offers a panorama of the history and artistic production of medieval and modern Spain (up to the 17th century).
Teaching methods
The course will combine formal lectures with research exercises on documents for students.
