In order to achieve these ends, - some major institutions of the catholic Church will be studied starting from Book II of the last Codex Iuri Canonici (1986) - the students will be introduced in the language and the methodology of Canon law.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of this activity, the student will be able - to read and interpret canonical dispositions - to individuate the theological foundations of the Church's institutions - to understand the relevance of a juridical reflection for the Church's practices.

Territory, communities and governance: canonical, legal and comparative approaches

At a time when the governance of the churches raises many questions, the course proposes to study the institutional structures of the "local church" (or officially "particular church"), whose normal figure is the diocese (cc. 369). Structures and accountabilty.

In a first approach, after recalling the theological and canonical status of the "local" or "particular" Church", the course will study the canonical provisions relating to the institutions that allow, in it and by it, the Church to be realized in one place.

At the same time, the course will bring into dialogue these canonical aspects with the requirements related to the regime of cults in state law (particularly European law and Belgian law). The objective is to question a theological and canonical reinterpretation of the issues related to these legal requirements.

Finally, a comparative approach with the regime of local communities of other cults will provide elements to complete the understanding of the specificity of each type of local governance and their self-understanding.
 
 
 
 
Teaching methods
Each part of the course is introduced in a classical way. After that, the course is organized by interactions with the students through a selection of readings and personal research.
 
Evaluation methods
The evaluation will be based on a paper of about fifteen pages to be written by each student and analysing a local institution to be discussed according to an integrated approach such as proposed in the course.
