Functional analysis of word order in Dutch, with special focus on the left and right periphery of the utterance.
Overview of methods of analysis for the identification of the periphery in natural data
Confrontation of theories and methods developed in the scientific literature to account for the role and function of the periphery.
 
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Students will be able to give an account of the principles that govern word order in Dutch, more specifically their functional and communicative aspects, in order to develop the students' profound grammatical knowledge.
Students will be able to analyse empirical data according to several theoretical frameworks.
Students will be able to confront and evaluate hypotheses, methods and theorietical frameworks applied to different aspects of word order in Dutch.

Content
Form and function of the left and right periphery in the Dutch sentence/utterance.
Introduction : Overview of definition and treatment of the peripheries in traditional Dutch grammars. Portfolio of specific linguistic studies of form and function of LP and RP in different theoretical frameworks.

 
Teaching methods
Portfolio discussion in flipped classroom configuration
Evaluation methods
Oral exam (theory and applications); students will be invited to comment on the methods, hypotheses, theoretical frameworks and results presented in the portfolio of scientific articles. In addition, they will present the results of their analysis of empirical data (identification of left and right periphery).
