Although we do not yet know how long the social distancing related to the Covid-19 pandemic will last, and regardless of the changes that had to be made in the evaluation of the June 2020 session in relation to what is provided for in this learning unit description, new learnig unit evaluation methods may still be adopted by the teachers; details of these methods have been - or will be - communicated to the students by the teachers, as soon as possible.

Main themes
This course is meant to lead to a lively and active discovery of the opera world, and thus to the music world, not only in its own realization but also in the devices helping its creation (composition, interpretation, rehearsals, direction, scenery, ').
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Discovery of the music and more particularly the opera world.
Acquisition of a critical and theoretical proceeding, through, among others, active listening and confrontation with lively pieces of work, both modern and older compositions.

Content
This course develops around a project in partnership with the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and the Opéra Royal de Wallonie (Liège).
After an introduction on the major steps of Opera history and its cultural stakes, students are invited to go and see five productions of the semester, each of these preceded by a detailed introduction.
External people are regularly invited within the framework of the course.
A visit of the Ateliers de la Monnaie or the Opéra Royal de Wallonie (Liège) and meetings with Theatre professionals (machinists, decorators, dressmakers, architects,...) are also included.
Teaching methods
The teaching methods for this course are varied and consist of lectures, visits of theatres (e.g. Ateliers de la Monnaie or Opera de Liège), conferences and compulsory attendance to the performances.
Evaluation methods
The course takes place during the whole year (1q + 2q).
a) January midterm exam : written exam on the content of the lectures as well as on the operas and performances attended in the first semester (50 % of the final grade).
b) June assessment : short written report on the operas attended in the second semester (50% of the final grade). This report must follow the guidelines that can be found on the Moodle platform. A non-submission of this report will result in a failure of the whole course, regardless of the January grade.  
c) Resit exam : written exam that focusses both on the content of the midterm exam and the issues tackled in the report for the June assessment (100% of the final grade).
