LFIAL1170 Fundamentos del español moderno I, LROM1180 Fundamentos del español moderno II, and LROM1281 Introducción al análisis lingüístico de corpus en español.

Main themes
This course deals with the characteristics of spoken and written Spanish, as well as with register differences. We will deal with topics such as (subject) pronoun use and deictics, linguistic politeness, discourse markers, coherence in the production...
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the students will have acquired in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of the (spoken and written) registers of modern Spanish. In addition, students will be able to analyse linguistic data from spoken and written Spanish, by consulting corpus data and referring to the scientific literature of this field, and to current theories.
Through these activities, students will also improve their linguistic competences concerning the use of different registers, as is part of the global aim: to reach the level B2 at the end of the cycle and to acquire certain competences of level C1.

Content
The aim of this course is to apply linguistic analyses and to introduce different phenomena in the realm of the pragmatics of spoken and written Spanish.
Teaching methods
The course consists of the explanation of the articles and of the application of the proposed analyses on the topics that are dealt with in this course.
The students are required to prepare the scientific articles on the topics that are dealt with. These articles will be explained in class. In addition, students are required to practice the use of corpora both during class and autonomously.
Evaluation methods
  • Oral exam (12/20)
  • Paper (8/20) (apply the analysis of one of the topics dealt with in a class on a (mini)corpus of own choice)
Not presenting one of the two parts of the evaluation implies a 0 score  for the entire course.
For the resit, students who did not pass the written paper in the first session, should resubmit an improved version of the paper. Not presenting one of the two parts of the evaluation (this includes submitting a version of the paper that has not been improved) implies a 0 score for the entire course.
