Main themes
In-depth study of classical Latin grammar.
This course deals with following issues:
1. Morphology (advanced level);
2. Basic structures of Latin syntax (complementary clauses, function and use of nominal verb forms);
3. Personal analysis and translation of a Latin prose text (cursory reading).
The exercises are devoted to syntax, prose composition and translation from Latin. There are also special exercises intended to morphological and lexical training.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student will have mastered the basic rules of the verbal syntax of classical Latin, and will have perfected his knowledge of its morphology and vocabulary.
He will be capable of translating prose texts of the classical period of average difficulty, and to translate from French into Latin (intermediary level).

Content
1. Grammar
1st quarter: syntax of the complementary subordinate (+ exercises)
2nd quarter: syntax complements: nominal forms of the verb (+ exercises)
2. Cursive reading
1st quarter: Sallustius, De coniuratione Catilinae, 1-16; 20; 31-32
2nd quarter: Cicero, In Catilinam, I
3. Exercise Sessions
Grammatical applications, versions, test preparation, short questions on cursive reading.
Several tests of vocabulary and morphology (nominal and verbal) are organized during these practice sessions.
Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Comodal (hybrid) format.
The first session of the course is organized via the Teams program.
Afterwards, the students are divided into two groups. According to a principle of alternation, each group follows the course either in face-to-face mode or in distant mode (broadcasting of the course via Teams).
These modalities could be transposed to distant mode only according to the evolution of the health situation.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Each of the following parts must be successful:                                         Weighting :
- written exam on grammar (theory + exercises)                                        50% of final score
- oral exam on cursive reading                                                                   30% of the final score
- regular tests during the year on vocabulary and morphology               20% of the final score

January exam (partial): 1st quarter subjects
June exam: 2nd quarter subjects
September exam: unsuccessful subjects in the first two sessions
