Introduction to conservation-restoration of heritage buildings.
Methodological and basic technological notions in four structured sections: general and historical concepts, art history, archaeological aspects and engineering. The course aims to allow students from different educational backgrounds to reach the same level of competence.
Essential conceptual notions to be considered in heritage matters and presentation of current conservation-restoration issues.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of the course the student will be able to reach the common required competencies regardless of their previous academic levels and build up a fundamental reading background.
The student will capable of forming a critical approach and to comprehend the specific issues of conservation-restoration of cultural immovable heritage.
 
Content
Vocabulary and typologies of immovable heritage.
Research methods and the exploitation of documentaries.
Methodology, concepts and elementary techniques relative to building archaeology and the archaeology of subsoil.
The significations of immovable heritage including different cultural approaches.
The genesis and evolution of the notion of conservation and the concepts of restoration.
The main institutions dealing with heritage, international and national organisations and relative policies, reglementation and legislation.
Integrated conservation.
The economical aspects of heritage.
Current heritage issues: authenticity, strategies before, during and after armed conflicts, environmental concerns, historical urban landscapes.
