Main themes
The course covers the following two linguistic fields :
1. Syntax : grammatical categories ; syntactic and semantic functions ; phrases ; simple, complex and compound sentences.
2. Stylistics : analysis of the lexical and syntactic differences between different varieties of English (speech vs writing ; formal vs informal style).
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Provide a foundation course in English syntax and stylistics and train students in the reading and writing of scientific articles in these two fields.
 
Content
This course provides a solid foundation in English syntax and stylistics.
Teaching methods
Combination of lectures and exercise sessions.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment: active participation in class and in the exercise sessions, as well as activities on the Moodle website. 
In June and/or September: written exam.
As we are aiming to train language specialists, particular attention will be paid to language accuracy in the assignments and exams related to the course.
Other information
This course is not taught in 2021-2022. Second-year Bachelor students who are required to take a course in English linguistics will take the LGERM1528 course ("Current issues and trends in English linguistics").
