Main themes
A better understanding of the environmental context of past societies and how the environment has been modified and exploited needs both a paleoenvironmental and economical study of the human communities. Methods and interpretation of the faunal and botanical fossiles and organic remains are developped in this course.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 The course helps the archaeologists to integrate the useful biological data in their analytical and interpretation processes and to ask for appropriate analyses on the field as in the labs
 
Content
We will introduce the different disciplines and techniques of archaeobotany and archaeozoology. We will use case studies to highlight their contribution to the knowledge of agro-pastoral and subsistence practices, domestication, trade and exchanges, paleoenvironment, etc. In order to document these topics, a representative assemblage of faunal and botanical remains from the archaeological context is needed. The necessary field sampling procedures will be taught.
Teaching methods
Theoretical courses and tutorials. Visits of laboratories and practicum during the SMART week.
Evaluation methods
Written exam (80% of the final mark) in the January session and in the September session. Continuous assessment: active participation in classes and tutorials (20% of the final mark).

English-friendly course: course taught in French but offering facilities in English.
