Main themes
This course, to be taken in parallel with LGLOR1142, deals with following issues :
1. The essential rules and structures of Latin syntax, in particular adverbial clauses;
2. A personal analysis and translation of a Latin text (cursory reading).
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student will have mastered the essential rules of the verbal syntax of classical Latin. He will also be capable of translating and analysing Latin prose texts of reduced difficulty, and to translate from French into Latin (elementary level).
 
Content
In-depth study of classical Latin grammar (description of syntactic functions and semantic roles). In the Latin Language I course, we will cover the following topics (non-exhaustive list):
  • Syntax of the simple clause.
  • Syntax of adverbial clauses.
At the same time, students will read a Latin text independently (cursive reading).
The practical work will consist of various exercises in vocabulary, morphology and version (among others).
Teaching methods
Alternating interactive class sessions and practical work.
Evaluation methods
Subject to adaptation of the modalities due to the evolution of the health crisis, the evaluation of the learning outcomes will take place as follows:
- Regular tests during practical work sessions, which will be worth one fifth of the final grade.
- Written test of theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including theme and version). This test will be worth two fifths of the final mark. It is divided between the two sessions in January (partial examination, 1/5 of the final mark) and June (1/5 of the final mark). Article 82 of the RGEE applies: “If the student does not sit the examination in June, he or she loses the benefit of the partial examination. If the student has not reached the pass mark for the January partial examination, he or she will sit an examination on the entire examination at the June session. In any case, in September, the examination covers the whole test.”
- Oral test to check mastery of cursive reading. This test will be worth two fifths of the final mark. It is spread over the two sessions of January (partial examination, 1/5 of the final mark) and June (1/5 of the final mark). Article 82 of the RGEE applies here (see above).
