Prerequisites
This course is given to absolute beginners: students of all faculties who have registered the course in their program of studies, members of the personnel of the UCL, free students (from the UCL or not) who have never studied the Portuguese language or have not reached an A2 level.
Main themes
The object of this course is to develop the communicative competence in general Portuguese (European or Brazilian) and to make students sensitive to the culture of the Portuguese-speaking countries, specially Portugal and Brazil.
The communicative contexts and the subjects are related to the everyday life: leisure, travel, home, invitations, family and friends, studies, future projects, etc.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1
  • Understand short texts written in common everyday language about everyday life (personal letters, advertisements, notices in public places, etc.).
  • Understand short, simple narrative or descriptive written texts.
  • Understand key information from short, simple spoken messages relating everyday life.
  • Understand sufficiently to react in simple and direct conversations which are spoken slowly and clearly.
  • Speak about oneself, one's environment and living conditions.
  • Communicate simple and current tasks requiring short and direct exchanges only.
  • Write short and current documents (a postcard, short messages, fill in a form, etc.).
  • Correctly pronounce the various sounds of standard Portuguese (European or Brazilian).
  • Control the vocabulary and the main grammatical contents and the linguistic exhibitors of basic Portuguese.
At the end of the course: A2 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages".

Content
The elements of the code (grammar and vocabulary) are built-in in significant contexts, grouped according to functional contents (to give and ask personal data, to speak about the usual actions, to speak about the spare time and tastes, to describe a city, to suggest activities, etc), and later they are practiced through written exercises (following the structural method), as well as through oral exercises requiring the development of an integral communicative competence (drills, role-plays, interviews, conversation in little groups).
The didactic materials are very heterogeneous: songs, plays, videos, advertisements, real or adapted texts created with a teaching goal, etc.
Teaching methods
The course is centered on communication and uses a method halfway between the communicative and the notion-functional one. An A1-A2 level book is used.
Evaluation methods
Various marks make up the final assessment:
  • 3 written tests throughout the year: 60%
  • a written exam (20%) and an oral exam (20%) at the end of the 2nd semester
  • september: written exam (65%) and an oral exam (35%)
