Prerequisites
The level A2 of 'the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages'. Remedial learning tools will be made available to weaker students.
Main themes
The course is based on different topics related to criminology.
  • The texts and videos used in the course are authentic materials and require the student to prepare the texts at home using reading techniques acquired in class.
  • Analysis and commentary of the texts and videos in class require the active participation of the student.
  • Vocabulary and basic structures are reinforced by written and oral exercises (analysing, commenting)
  • Grammar is studied in context and reinforced by regular exercises.
  • English pronunciation is practised through exercises based on general and specific vocabulary.

    Content
    This course is aimed at improving reading and listening comprehension skills and is based on authentic material oriented towards the students' field of interest (criminology); it is also aimed at giving the students a better mastery of the linguistic code of English through grammatical and pronunciation exercises as well as developing the students' general, specific and academic vocabulary.

    By the end of the course, the students should have acquired reading skills roughly corresponding to the level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and listening skills to the level B1 of the same framework.
    Teaching methods
    The LANGL 1823 course includes 30 hours of on-site classroom activities as well as self-tuition on Moodle.
    • Extensive reading of texts at home using reading strategies and note-taking techniques
    • Content-based activities in class
    • Analysis of and comments on the texts
    • Lexical extension exercises and comments on language
      points
    • Extensive and intensive decoding of television programmes
    • Pronunciation exercises on general and specific vocabulary
    ! The teaching modalities may be subject to change in accordance with the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic. The students will of course be notified of these possible changes in due course.
    Evaluation methods
    At the beginning of the year, the students can take an exemption test of the same level as the final exam (compulsory enrolment). The students who pass the test with a mark of at least 12 out of 20 will be exempted from the course and the exam.
    Attendance at this language course is required. In accordance with article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the teacher may propose to the jury that a student who has two unjustified absences per term be refused registration for the January, June or September session.
    Partial exam in January (35%)
    1. Written exam on texts and videos seen in Q1 as well as on first term self-tuition material + reading aloud test (30%). MCQ + open questions.
    2. Continuous assessment (tests + homework done on the Moodle platform during Q1) (5%)
    Final exam in June (65%)
    1. Written exam on texts and videos seen in Q2, on second term self-tuition material as well as on new reading and listening material + reading aloud test (55%). MCQ + open questions.
    2. Continuous assessment (tests + homework done on the Moodle platform during Q2 + active participation in class in Q1 and Q2) (10%)
    September exam (100% or 85%)
    The September exam is on the material of the whole academic year. MCQ + open questions.
    The continuous assessment is taken into account if it is to the student's advantage.
