Main themes
Introduction to the main types of religious, civil and military architecture from the 5th to the 15th centuries. General issues relating to the emergence of forms and to the creation, diffusion and understanding of works. Analyses of these in terms of these different perspectives. Focus on medieval architecture, in its historical and technical context. Role of the master builder and of the commissioner.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Learn how to analyse a selection of significant works of western architecture from the middle ages using a variety of methodologies. Develop the ability to summarize specific analyses in such a way as to acquire a chronological and typological overview relating to both the history of forms and to the history of themes.
 
Content
By means of case study, offer a chronological and/or thematic overview of the forms and themes of western architecture in the middle ages through major works. The methodology is mainly based on case studies illustrated by images displayed in the lecture hall. Works will be arranged in chronological and/or thematic order, taking care to place the emphasis on stylistic and iconographic transformation whatever the typological field concerned. Evaluation grids will vary so as to present the diversity and complementarity of the scientific approaches.
