Content
Academic English is a specific genre with specific textual and linguistic features. In this course, you will learn to use the linguistic features and rhetorical functions typical of academic English. We will also show you various reference tools to help you improve your academic skills.
The aim is for you to learn how to write an academic paper/research projet and present it orally (respecting the features of the genre).
Please note that this is not a ‘general English’ conversation class.
Teaching methods
Vol.1 of the course (15h) will be taught to the whole group face-to-face (or via TEAMS if necessary - for example in the event of a health crisis such as COVID).
Vol. 2 of the course (22h30) will be divided into three sub-types of exercises whose distribution will be specified each year according to the number of students enrolled: completion of online exercises, short writing tasks, preparation of short oral presentations, full group exercise and feedback sessions and sub-group sessions.
Evaluation methods
Various compulsory exercises (to be carried out step-by-step as a preparation for the end of term paper) are to be completed online throughout the semester. This part of the course counts for 20% of the final grade.
Written EAP paper to be submitted onMoodle by June 1st (50% of the final grade) and a commented powerpoint presenting this work to be submitted to Moodle by June 1st (30% of the final grade).
The final mark for course (in June and/or Septembert) is the weighted means of the three parts. As we are aiming to train academic language specialists, the focus on language accuracy is of particular importance. Details on the specific weight of language accuracy is available in a document on the Moodle course platform.
Online resources
Most documents, reference sources and exercise materials will be made freely available via the Moodle platform.
