Prerequisites
The course is intended for students with a good knowledge of Arabic.
Main themes
The course covers the following topics:
- Concepts of codicology;
- Presentation of the issues involved in the copying and transmission of Arabic texts;
- Presentation of different medieval and modern Arabic scripts;
- Practical initiation to the reading of Arabic manuscripts (reading exercises);
- Introduction to the methods of editing Arabic texts (theoretical and practical aspects).
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | decipher an Arabic manuscript, or find the necessary help to read it; |
| 2 | read, analyse and critically use an edition (introduction and apparatus); |
| 3 | collate different witnesses of a given text and prepare a provisional edition; |
| 4 | se bibliographic and working tools. |
Content
The seminar focuses on Arabic palaeography and methods of critical edition and textual criticism.
The seminar is primarily practical: the student will learn to read medieval and modern manuscripts and to edit a medieval text critically.
Each part of the course will consist of two phases: a first phase consisting of a theoretical lecture, and a second phase comprising practical exercises.

Teaching methods
Part of the course is lectured (theoretical presentations). The rest consists of practical exercises.
Evaluation methods
Oral examination accompanied by a written assignment.
