Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

On completing this Course Unit in translation, students (bloc 2) should be able to:
- Translate an unfamiliar text in correct French (in relation to grammar and vocabulary) using the range of possibilities available in their mother tongue (collocations, set expressions, etc.);
- Convey the message in language A, respecting the author's intentions as well as the style and register of the original text and avoiding calque related errors;
- Carry out a translation demonstrating their complete understanding of the source text;
- Assess the appropriateness of the possible equivalences, and, with due critical distance, select the most appropriate;
- Use appropriate translation techniques in order to resolve any difficulties inherent in a source text and develop awareness of the nature of the translation process;
- Check the meaning of words through judicious use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries;
- Use the grammar learnt in bloc 1 and bloc 2 during the transfer (translation) into language C taking care to avoid calque errors.
 
Content
Q1 and Q2 :
Practical translation exercises (from C into A) exploiting texts of a general nature, which may related or not to a particular theme
Teaching methods
C>A Group or individual correction - including discussion about translation solutions used in translation work undertaken before the class. Occasional research tasks in relation to paratextual and other information outside the text.
Students are required to prepare for and actively participate in classes.
Evaluation methods
Comprehensive integrated assessment (written exam) at the end of semesters.
Translation of an unseen text of + - 300 words (MHES1231 A) and + - 400 words (MHES1231 B) with dictionary (s) 'paper', forbidden electronic resources.
For AIM students (Q1 2020) the MHES1231 A exam can be held in May.

The quality of French is one of the most relevant evaluation criteria. Exam papers with 5 (five) or more spelling, grammar, or syntax errors will automatically be assigned a failing grade.
The reference dictionary will be Le Petit Robert (2016 and later editions).
