On completing this Course students should: - Possess a solid understanding of the major trends (issues) in contemporary French literature; - Be able to pursue informed reflection on the importance of literature and on how it ‘works'; - Be able to identify the authors and works studied during the course; - Be able to identify, describe and use certain stylistic devices (figures of speech, punctuation, etc.) studied during the course; - Be able to master the basics of scientific writing; - Be able to use the theory studied during the course to express themselves with precision, nuance and finesse. |

Content
This Course examines contemporary French literature with the purpose of giving future translators/interpreters a solid grounding in the discipline: with this aim in mind, it studies, for example, a range of contemporary themes, including: personal essays, travel literature, the ‘world' of books (literature prizes, book publishing, for example), literary translation, etc. Through the close text analysis of a small selection of texts it also aims to consider the idea of style and, not least, give students an opportunity to work on aspects of style in their own writing (figures of speech, finesse of expression and phraseology, punctuation, basics of scientific writing, etc.).

Teaching methods
Lectures, readings of extracts, analysis and practical/applied exercises.
Evaluation methods
Course assessment takes the form of a written exam composed of a variety of question types: multiple choice questions (true/false, extract/author recognition, identification of figures of speech, etc.), closed questions requiring short answers, open questions on theoretical aspects, free writing following instructions.
