At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
At the end of the course students should be able to translate literally the extracts of medieval works studied and to formulate a more literary translation into correct modern French. They should be able to consult reference works, to use dictionaries and grammars of early French effectively. They should have read in translation, if possible juxtaposed, at least all the works from which they have seen an extract in the ancient text. They should be able to master phonetic transcription, to apply to Latin etymons the major principles of phonetic evolution studied, to recognise in ancient forms the stage of evolution in progress and in contemporary French words the result of these evolutions, to distinguish words resulting from "regular" evolution from words modified by analogy, created in a learned manner or borrowed from foreign languages, to draw comparisons with the other Romance language they are learning. Students should have a different view of their mother tongue, perceive the relative character of linguistic phenomena, be sensitive to the difference between oral and written, between usage and norm, and reflect on the way language functions and evolves today. |
