First part of LARAB1101 or an equivalent training.
Main themes
An introduction to the ancient and literary Arabic, which is the language of the Koran and of all great works of classical Arabic literature.
This course focuses on reading and writing, and enables students to acquire a basic vocabulary, as well as some familiarity with a first part of the Arabic grammar.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student will be capable to read, transliterate and translate short texts at a basic level of difficulty. To achieve this goal, he will master the alphabet, the reading and writing of Arabic. He will acquire a basic vocabulary and get familiar with the first mechanisms and structures of the language (morphology and syntax).
 
Content
Introduction to the literary and ancient Arabic language, that of the Koran and all the great texts of classical Arabic literature.
This course deals with reading and writing, and allows the acquisition of a basic vocabulary, as well as the command of a first part of Arabic grammar.
Teaching methods
Each course session is divided into two phases: a first theoretical part devoted to the explanation of Arabic grammar followed by a series of practical translation exercises based on the vocabulary studied.
Each week, the student will study vocabulary words. In order to ensure the regularity of this study, short tests will be organised at the beginning of each course, the results of which will count towards the exam.
Two course materials will be offered to students: a lexicon of words and particles, and a grammar vade mecum.
Evaluation methods
The examination is divided into two parts: a written part consisting of an Arabic version, and an oral part covering the subject matter discussed in class.
