Environmental protection takes the form not only of material obligations with regard to preserving natural environments and the fight against harmful effects but also of procedural laws. The course aims to apprehend these procedural laws in order to be able to grasp their concrete implementation in the existing legal regimes.

Content
Initially, the course covers two of the procedural laws available to the public in the framework of the access to information as regards the environment and public participation in the decision-making processes of specific activities or in the planning processes. Particular attention is paid to international law and European Union law (Aarhus Convention, directives of transposition) and to their impact on the existing legal systems of the Belgian Federal state and of the three Belgian regions.

The second part of the course addresses the evaluation procedures of environmental impact, on the basis of the requirements of European Union law (Directive 2011/92/EU; Directive 2001/42/EC; Directive 92/43/EC) through the provisions for transposition in internal law.
