This course aims at providing food for thought on the European Construction process - a recent process on the history time scale but undoubtedly rooted in a much older past. Therefore, this course will not only consider the European idea on the long term, but it will also focus on: 1. the different steps of the European Construction (crises, progress, deepening and enlargements, '); 2. the role played by the stakeholders (the founding fathers of the European Union) and the institutions; 3. the cultural dimension. |

Content
This course will be divided into 4 main parts. The first one will address the issue of the historical and cultural foundations of Europe. We will not only define concepts such as “identity”, “consciousness” and European “sentiment” but also highlight the roots of European identity (from antiquity to the present day). In a second step, the course will focus on the question of the mechanisms that govern the emergence of an initial European awareness (1914-1945). In a third part, we will analyse the transition from “dreamed Europe to Europe in Action” and discuss the major steps of European integration (1940 to 1989). Finally, the last theme will take us to the challenges that face tomorrow's Europe, but not without returning to the very recent history of European integration from the end of the Cold War to the Lisbon Treaty (1989-2007).
