At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to Western history, with a focus on societies. The perspective adopted is a resolutely trans-period one: the class will focus on the evolution of Western societies in the long term, from ancient times to the present day. At the end of the class, the student will have to master the main chronological landmarks of western societies and be able to recontextualize these societies, but also to put into perspective the historical dynamics over the long time.
 
Content
The course is structured around cross-cultural topics such as power dynamics, religion, collective identities, etc. Each of these themes is explored through different case-studies pertaining to the various periods of the history of Western Societies, from Classical Antiquity to the present day. The students are also introduced to the methods ans aims of the critical assessment of iconographical sources.
Teaching methods
In-person course supplemented with a diverse iconographical material, as well as powerpoint presentations that will be shared on the Moodle platform.
Evaluation methods
The oral exam is designed so as to assess the level of both general as well as specific knowledge of the student regarding the taught material. It consists of one open question with preparation time, and one specific question.
