Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the history of western art. More specifically, they will have gained a better grasp of, firstly, the relationship between themes and the formal characteristics of each style, and, secondly, they will understand the social, economic, political, philosophical, religious and cultural conditions which have made these styles possible. Students will also be able to identify as well as situate, both historically and geographically, the works studied during the course.
 
Content
The course aims to provide historical and stylistic background information, as well as any sociological, political, economic, philosophical, religious, scientific, literary insights that are useful for an understanding of the plastic arts (architecture, painting, sculpture, as well as, as far as possible, the graphic and "applied" arts that have emerged in succession and/or in opposition in the west from the middle ages to the modern day.
Teaching methods
Lectures dealing with theoretical issues, supported by the use slides.
Evaluation methods
Summative assessment methods: firstly, open oral questions that require the student to demonstrate an ability to comparatively analyse and synthesise and, secondly, oral questions that test the students ability to identify the illustrations studied in class (or similar). These two strands of assessment are equally weighted.
Formative assessment: students are given the opportunity to practice the different types of examination question during the course.
