At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This course has two objectives. Firstly, to familiarise students with the theoretical foundations of diplomatics and palaeography. Secondly, to give students the skills to be able to apply the theory with regard to: deciphering ancient texts, identification of writings, textual analysis of historical documents, etc.
 
Content
The palaeography part of the course considers evolution of the roman alphabet since the early centuries BC to the 18th Century. The course examines the principal characteristics of each type of alphabet using historical documents. The diplomatics part covers a wide historical period from the 7th to the 18th centuries and introduces students to the principal rules and traditions of the field.
Teaching methods
As well as covering the theory, the course is also applied and offers students the opportunity to decipher and analyse historical charters themselves in class.
Evaluation methods
The students have to prepare some texts that are examined in class.

The final examination has three parts 1) a theoretical part 2) the analyse of a text studied in class 3) the analysis of a second text not previously studied in class.
