The theme of the course is: "Revolutions, nationalism and imperialism in Europe, 1789-1914". This course is devoted to the main revolutionary movements, the emergence of nationalism and the imperialist policies of European states during the long 19th century. The perspective adopted is comparative and transnational. The aim is to understand the mechanisms by which ideas, political models and cultural and technical phenomena circulate, by reconstructing the logic specific to different social groups and even to certain individuals. The course also examines the complex interactions between different national and cultural frameworks and seeks to assess the impact of major phenomena on Western societies.

Teaching methods

This is a lecture course. Some class sessions are devoted to analysing documents or commenting on readings (articles). Course materials (outline, PowerPoint, readings and bibliography, etc.) are provided on Moodle. The course material is what is said in class. Regular attendance is therefore strongly recommended.

Evaluation methods

Written examination, consisting of a summary question and several questions requiring shorter answers. The exam assesses students' knowledge of the subject as well as their ability to reason, make links and argue on a problematic that deals with a topic covered in the course.
