On completing the course « Grammar in Practice » at B2, students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:

Content
Grammar : In-depth analysis (descriptive and normative) of Dutch sentence structure (simple and compound sentences), with a detailed focus on each constituent part of the sentence (what may/may not be there, order of complements within a given constituent part, rules for moving them from one part to another, etc.). The course will be devoted to the different sorts of sentences in Dutch and how they are structured.
Grammatical transformations (second term). Parallel readings to highlight grammatical translation techniques.
Teaching methods
Grammar :
Lecture.
Learning by resolving problems.
Exercises (practical work, guided study, simulation, etc.).
Grammatical transformations :
Exercises and paper.
Evaluation methods
Grammar. Summative written test, at the end of each semester, covering a variety of questions on specific difficulties in Dutch syntax.
Written examination.
Grammatical transformations. Paper to be handed in during the last week of April.
This teaching unit has two distinct parts (grammar/grammatical transformations) and therefore distinct assessments. The overall mark for the unit is an average calculated according to the procedures below. If you fail the course, you are invited to consult the detailed marks on the Moodle page of the course. A mark of 10/20 or higher for a part of the course will automatically be carried over to the second session and therefore cannot be repeated, provided the student has presented all parts.
Weighting:
Grammar: 75% of the grade of the course.
Grammatical transformations: 25% of the grade of the course.
