Environmental issues, and in particular climate change, raise questions about the ecological and social sustainability of our economic system. This seminar proposes to discuss the tensions that exist between economic growth and the limits of the planet and the need to mobilize new analytical frameworks and indicators to think about the sustainable development of our societies.
The objective of the seminar is to lead students to develop a coherent economic argumentation on a current issue related to climate and the sustainability of our economic model. The specific content of each seminar may change from one year to another.
Typically, this seminar:
- addresses topics such as the promises and limits of new economic models such as the circular economy, the functional economy or the sharing economy, as well as new regulatory instruments such as the pollution rights market (emissions trading system) or the carbon tax,
- discusses concepts such as decoupling, the rebound effect, or exnovations,
- aims to mobilize new theoretical frameworks and analytical grids - such as the donut theory, transition theories or the conceptual framework of the commons - to analyze issues related to the sustainability of our economic model.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	The seminar aims at bringing students to work on specific topics related to current environmental issues, and in particular climate issues, and the way they question the ecological and social sustainability of our economic model. Students learn to understand the complexity of sustainability issues. They will develop their capacity (1) for the analysis of a complex economic-environmental problem, (2) for synthesis and coherent economic argumentation, (3) for oral presentation (4) for group work.
