Main themes
We will look at a corpus of short literary texts (narrative, poetic and theatrical works) using a progressive approach. To begin with, the emphasis will be on the development of short forms in the Spanish speaking world (especially the microrrelato of the 19th and 21st centuries). At a later stage, we will undertake an analysis based on the main categories of narratology and stylistics. A methodical procedure for analysing texts will be put forward.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This course is designed to provide students with the foundations of methodology for literary analysis by means of short contemporary texts (stories, poems, mini-theatre from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries) from Spanish literature. 
By the end of the course, students should be able to 
  • site a text within the system of literary genres of the Spanish-speaking world ;
  • know the main characteristics and stages of development of each genre ;
  • identify, with a critical eye, the main narratological and stylistic categories in a short literary text.
 
 
Content
The course offers a reasoned exploration of short genres in 19th, 20th and 21st century Hispanic literature. After a brief summary about the literary genres, the poem, the micro-fictionand the short theatre will be considered in turn.
Teaching methods
Lectures alternating with individual and group exercises. The aims of the course are: (1) to understand the system of literary genres in the Hispanic world and how it has evolved  in recent centuries; (2) to learn how to analyse texts; (3) to become familiar with Spanish theatre, in theory and practice. Preliminary reading of the texts covered in the course is of vital importance for developing Spanish language skills and literary analysis skills.
Evaluation methods
During the semester, students will read the preparatory texts and complete three written assignments (4 points).
At the end of the semester there will be a written test focused on the knowledge of the concepts worked on in class, the texts studied, the analytical tools presented in class and their application to a new text. (16 points)
