Main themes
The seminar will focus on the following themes:
  • classifying epigraphic texts: decrees, laws, treaties, accounts, inventories, offerings, epitaphs, manumission records, contracts, defixiones, etc.
  • studying the Greek alphabet, from the Archaic to the Imperial periods.
  • editing epigraphic texts.
  • reading, commenting, and dating Greek inscriptions.
  • developing technical skills: squeeze, photography, facsimile.
  • mastering bibliographical tools and digital resources.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this seminar, students will be able to:
  • read Greek inscriptions on photography, squeeze and/or facsimile.
  • edit and study Greek inscriptions in a comprehensive and relevant way (lemma, transcription, restitution, translation, dating, commentary).
  • correctly use bibliography and working tools.
 
Content
Systematic classification of potentially engraved on stone or metal documents, and of Greek alphabets used from the Archaic to the Imperial periods. Technical exercises: squeezing, photographing, and making a facsimile. Training to do an epigraphic edition: writing a lemma, making a transcription, restitutions. Introduction to handling epigraphic corpora and working tools. Reading, translating, commenting and dating exercises.
Teaching methods
The seminar consists of lectures, tutorials, coursework, and collective reading of Greek inscriptions.
Evaluation methods
Final paper and oral exam.
