Content
The history of identities in Belgium is a complex one. The Belgian national identity has not always existed, and has coexisted and coexists with other collective identities, notably (infra- or supra-)national, regional, denominational and others. The Belgian case is far from unique. This question of the emergence and development of a national identity and of competing, encompassing or complementary identities is not unique to Belgium, and has been the subject of research and debate by many historians and other scholars for several decades. With this in mind, the course will consider how historians can think about and examine the question of national and collective identities, both in the case of Belgium and other entities.
