Main themes
Through the study of selected themes, this course will attempt to compare the major religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism) in order to highlight both their significant peculiarities and differences and their profound similarities. By making use of critical comparative analysis, the course will try to dismiss superficial resemblances and to recognize hidden correspondences or equivalences.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student will be able:
- to take a critical look at the religious phenomenon as it appears in the great religions of the present world: representations of the world and of human existence, relation to the founding texts , rites, ethical proposals, disciplines of salvation;
- to use the basic tools of history and comparative study of religions.
 
Content
- Define the religious phenomenon and its varied expressions, the sacred and the profane, theistic and non-theistic religions, oral and textual spiritual transmission, religion and society.
- The history of religions: a multidisciplinary approach, the founders and the evolution of the discipline, methodological elements (analysis of texts, myths, study of cults and rites, crossed influences, ethical values, spiritual paths to salvation), the paradigm of religion.
- Criticism of methods, ethno-methodological tools, dangers and interest of comparatism.
- An overview of the major religious currents of humanity and their history (prehistoric religions, animism and shamanism, ancient religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism) and neo-religious movements.
- Studies on research topics such as the evolution of the notion of karman in India, death and future post-mortem in some religions, the status of causality in Christianity and Buddhism, God-gods and Buddhism.
- Critical comparative approach of religions
