Main themes
This course will offer a discussion about the concept of "barroco" through a survey of major historiographical works, the analysis of several representative works of the XVII c. (Quevedo, Góngora, Calderón de la Barca) and of contemporary literature (Sarduy, Carpentier). This course also includes references to artistic productions.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Students will be expected to show their ability to relate texts that illustrate one literary current -el barroco- to the historical and literary contexts explored in the course. They will have to produce an analysis that demonstrates their familiarity with the issues raised by the course, and with the poetics through which those issues are expressed.
 
Content
The course aims to problematise key notions of Spanish literary historiography such as "baroque" and "neo-baroque" through the concrete analysis of literary works considered in their cultural context (with a special emphasis on baroque painting). In this way, the separations between Spanish and Latin American literatures will also be questioned, as well as the relationship between literature, painting and cinema.

2. El barroco como arte del trampantojo: una lectura de las Novelas ejemplares de Cervantes
3. La vida es sueño de Pedro Calderón de la Barca y la teatralidad barroca. El problema de la libertad: lectura filosófica y comparación con Hamlet.
Segunda parte: el barroco latinoamericano (siglos XX-XXI)
1. Aproximaciones al neobarroco. Un ejemplo paradigmático: la obra pictórica de Alfredo Márquez.
2. Poesía hispanoamericana y barroco
3 Alejo Carpentier, El Siglo de las Luces: ékfrasis y temporalidad del acontecimiento. Racionalidad europea vs el amor como emancipación.
Teaching methods
The course alternates presentations of literary  currents (barroco / neobarroco) with analysis of literary texts.

Written exam.
