Main themes


  1. 1.      Ethology: definitions and the four questions of Tinbergen; history; behavioural mechanisms (innate and acquired); evolution of behaviour (domestication effect). These notions are illustrated with examples related to domestic animals and Veterinary Medicine.
  2. 2.      Ethograms : General characteristics of the behaviour of most domestic species are presented, and the students are making aware of the veterinary applications.
  3. 3.      Questions about Veterinary Ethology and Animal Welfare: The potential applications of Ethology to improve animal welfare are discussed during seminars based on a student group work. (vol 2 ' 9h)
  4. Learning how to obtain scientific documents (use of databases) and how to use them in the framework of the seminars  (vol 2 ' 6h)
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Evaluation of group work (seminars). Active attendance at these seminars is mandatory. Any unjustified absence will be sanctioned.
In this case and pursuant to Article 72 of the General Rules of Studies and Examinations, the course holder may propose to the jury to oppose the registration of the examination. The final EU assessment is based on group work (25% of the grade) and an oral exam with prior preparation (75% of the grade).
