Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

On completing this Unit the student should:- Without a dictionary, understand a text in simple LSFB simple (history, simple information, simple sentences);
- Extract the key information from such a text and transfer and convey them in the target language;
- Answer general and specific questions on these texts;
- Have enriched their lexicon in terms of both current usage and a range of topics
- Use basic translation tools;
- Analyse, compare and comment critically with reference to relevant theory on the translations of simple texts.
 
Content
The course is divided into three modules:
1. Text comprehension (30 hours)
2. Lexicology (30 hours)
3. Introduction to translation (15 hours)
The modules ‘Text Comprehension' and ‘Lexicology' are taught in conjunction with the Mastering Sign Language (Oral) course around several topics with a particular focus on the understanding of signed messages.

Exercises (based on videos of natural discourse in LSFB);

Descriptive approach to translation
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment (participation in class, homework)
Mid-course assessment (30%) : short video-based test individually and in groups
Final assessment (70%): video-based test individually and in groups

An unjustified absence of more than three sessions or an unjustified defect in the timely delivery of written work may lead to an objection to registration for the examination concerned.
