Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Reading comprehension
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  • grasp the content and significance of articles and reports on topics connected with their interests or their jobs.
Level B2 of the « Common European Framework of References for Languages ».
     
    2 Listening comprehension
    At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
    • understand the gist of TV programmes concerning general topics and oriented towards their fields of interest in standard and clearly articulated English language.

    3 Usage:
    1. revision and reinforcement of elementary and intermediate vocabulary in context,
    2. grammar revision
    3. phonetics
     
    Content
    LANGL1841 is a 2-hour course given in the second term.
    Moodle LANGL1841: This platform is used to propose online activities to all students. Those activities deal with topics connected with their studies. Thanks to online tests, students can also test their understanding of the grammar and vocabulary that they have to study.
    Teaching methods
    In the second term, the groups are divided as follows: groups 1-2 : less than 4 at the placement test (beginners) group 3-7 : more than 4.5 and less than 10/20 at the placement test.
    Evaluation methods
    1. Compulsory Placement Test : all students must take this ONLINE test (on Moodle) in Octobre. Top-ranked students (more than 10/20 at the placement test) will be invited to take an exemption test during the First Term. On the basis of the results, students can be exempted from the course and the final exam (10/20). 
    2. The Final (Written) Exam: The final exam takes place in June.
    Material
    • All grammar units mentioned in the program
    • All pronunciation exercises in the course notes/ Le Répétiteur
    • All reading and listening exercises on Moodle/in the course notes
    • Vocabulary from the course notes
    3. Progress bar (10%) work done on the Moodle platform during the whole year. The percentage is taken into account proportionally (60% = 6/10, 70% = 7/10 etc) 
    Third written exam (Sept.) covers everything and continuous assessment will not be taken into account. Only the mark of the exam will be taken into account.
    Other information
    Student-led classes are organized in Q1 in addition to the LANGL1841 classes (Aide a la Réussite channel).
    Different possibilities of remediation will be recommended to weaker students - if necessary. Among these possibilities Aide à la Réussite classes will be offered.
