The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.

Main themes

In-depth study of classical Greek grammar, mainly syntax, with a linguistic approach (origin and evolution of the structures of the language).
Both Level III courses (A and B) will cover a selection of chapters related to the syntax of the simple and complex sentence.
In addition, the student will learn additional vocabulary and translate short texts (versions) and long texts (cursive).

Content

Systematic study of classical Greek grammar (with emphasis on syntax).
This course will cover the following topics (the list is not exhaustive):
- Syntax of moods and tenses;
- Case syntax;
- Complement clauses;
- Word order and information structure.
In parallel, students will read independently two or three Greek texts (cursive readings).
Exercise sessions will include revisions in morphology and vocabulary, exercises on the grammatical topics covered in class and translations from Greek into French and from French into Greek.

Teaching methods

Alternating interactive class sessions and exercise sessions.

Evaluation methods

1. Regular tests during practical work sessions (20 % of the final grade). In the event of failure, the student is required to sit a complementary test (translation from Greek into French)  during the September session.
2. Oral examination assessing the mastery of cursive reading (40 % of the final grade), spread over the January and June sessions. Article 82 of the RGEE applies: “If a student sits a part-exam in the January session and passes, he or she shall be examined on the remainder in the June session. If he or she does not sit the June examination, he or she shall lose the benefit of the part-exam. If the student does not pass the January part-exam, he or she shall sit the full exams in the June
session. In any event, the September session shall be full exams.”
3. Written examination assessing theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek (40 % of the final grade) in June. In the event of failure, the student must retake the exam in September.
