Main themes
  • systematic review of the plants most commonly used in therapy (used anatomic parts, active ingredients, quality criteria, pharmacological properties, main indications, adverse effects, contra-indications, dosing regimens)
  • other medications from natural sources and food supplements
  • general principles of drug-drug interactions involving natural products
practical courses : macroscopic identification of plants in herbal teas and microscopic identification of plants in powders
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 - to know the pharmacology of the main drugs from natural origin
 
- to know the risks of interactions between natural products and other drugs
 
Content
most plants used in pharmacy (parts used, chemical composition, quality criteria, pharmacological properties, main uses, side effects, contraindications, doses)
-Difference between medicines and food supplement
-pharmaceutical forms of herbal medicines
- Plant-drug interactions
Practical part: identification of plants as teas and microscopically
Teaching methods

Evaluation methods
Evaluation :The test of theoretical knowledge will be carried out by a written examination, except in particular cases. The students will have to integrate the different aspects of the subject (pluridisciplinarity). The exam will appeal not only to memory, but also to reflection, logic and critical thinking. The work (personal or group) will also be  evaluated. A practical examination will be organized after the practical work
The theoretcial note will be on 17/20 and the practical evalution on 3/20.
Other information
Participation in practical work, tutorials and exercise sessions is mandatory (unless specific sanitary measures) and essential to validate the teaching unit. Any unjustified absence will result in a penalty for the teaching unit examination which may go as far as the cancellation of the examination mark for the year of study in question (0/20). In the event of repeated absences, even if justified, the teacher may propose to the jury that he/she oppose registration for the teaching unit exam in accordance with Article 72 of the RGEE.
