At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This course charts the development of historical practice from Antiquity to the Annales School. The focus is on the main historians and their work, on scholarly styles and methodological trends in writing history.
 
Content
The course examines the practice of writing history since the Greco-Roman Antiquity to the early twentieth century, as well as the philosophical movements, schools of thought, and scientific developments that contributed to shape this practice through the ages.
Teaching methods
The course follows a chronological progression. It examines the main historians in Western Europe through the ages, as well as their scholarly work within their socio-political, philosophical and cultural context. Text excerpts are analyzed in the classroom; they provide relevant case-studie, thereby supplemeting the theory taught in class.
Evaluation methods
Oral examination.
