This course aims at preparing the students for their upcoming master thesis through a personal piece of work that shows their capability to use, analyse and make a written synthesis of sources (published or unpublished).

Content
Each student is requested to address a specific aspect of a shared theme relating to the history of the Modern Times, more specifically (but not exclusively) the history of the ancient Southern Netherlands of the sixteenth to eighteenth century. The theme and the sources on which the research is based vary from year to year, but always relate to the field of political, institutional and legal history.
Teaching methods
Common and directed definition of the subject; bibliographical research and state of the question; practical (and supervised) implementation of palaeography and diplomacy; introduction to the critical edition of manuscript sources; analysis of documents; communal sessions during which we will discuss the method, specific issues and results.
Evaluation methods
The final written work will include, in addition to an in depth analysis and an exhaustive bibliography, a critical edition of sources appended to the work. The assessment also takes into account the oral presentation of the research results (mid-term).
