Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of the grammar practice unit, the student in block 2 demonstrates that he/she is able to :
- mobilise the theoretical knowledge taught
- apply grammatical structures in context (use of tenses, indicative/subjunctive) as well as spelling and conjugation rules
- compare the different options available in the same context on the basis of differences in meaning or register
- structure their knowledge and update it
- justify grammatical structures in context and translate them.
 
Content
Theoretical and practical course.
Normative approach.
Emphasis will be put on the complex sentence, the verb system, tense concordance and the detailed and contrastive use of the subjunctive and prepositions.
In addition, the course aims to enable students to carry out a grammatical analysis of a contemporary Spanish text and translate it with an eye for nuance.
Teaching methods
T1 : 30 h grammar, teacher: S.Teuwen
T2: 15 h grammar, prof S.Teuwen; 15 h translation into C, prof. A.Pizarro Pedraza
Grammar part :
Theoretical lectures applied through numerous exercises, in-class or otherwise.
Preparation and active participation in class and online are required.  At the teacher's discretion, 15% of the classroom-based course may be replaced by supervised and/or independent distance learning work.
Translation part
Theoretical explanations in class.
Individual translation into Spanish of simple and complex sentences from the syllabus 
Correction and feedback in the classroom.
Spanish-speaking Erasmus students will be given additional exercises.
At the professor's discretion, 15% of the classroom-based course may be replaced by supervised and/or independent distance learning work.
Evaluation methods
In order to obtain the credits associated with a course, the student must take all the examination parts related to it (whether they concern learning activities or course parts).
GRAMMAR PART First term (T1) and Second (T2) (S.Teuwen)
MHES1212A - T1 - January
In-class exam on the computer lab, including a part on Moodle and a handwritten part.
Points will be allocated as follows: exam 80% - average of tests 10% - class participation 5% - Moodle participation (closing date 9 December) 5%.
BMHES1212A-T1 - June (for Erasmus out) and September
In-class exam on the computer lab, including a part on Moodle and a handwritten part.
Points will be allocated as follows: exam 100%
BMHES1212B - T2 - June and September - grammar part
September: 100% exam.
The exam will take place in class, at the computer lab, and will include a section on Moodle and a hand-written section.
Cycle continuation: students who are required to retake MHES1211 sit the MHES1212A exam in accordance with the terms and conditions of 23-24; students who are required to retake MHES1241 sit the MHES1212B exam in accordance with the terms and conditions of 23-24.
BMHES1212B - T2 - June and September - translation part (A. Pizarro Pedraza)
Points allocated as follows: 85% final exam (written), 15% class participation and individual weekly work determined by the professor. September: 100% translation exam
Machine translation tools are permitted in class for specific translation exercises as indicated by the professor. They willalways be forbidden during the exams. 
In all cases, the use of any technology will be done responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity and will therefore be systematically indicated by the student.
The final grade is the weighted average of grades A and B. In the final mark, part A (T1) is worth 30% and part B (T2) is worth 70% (50% grammar and 50% translation)
If you fail MHES1212B, you are invited to consult the detailed marks on the MOODLE page of the course. A 10/20 or higher mark for any part of the course will automatically be transferred to the second session and and it will therefore not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course, provided that all parts have been taken. If you are absent or fail to attend one of the parts, your mark will not be transferred.
