Prerequisites

The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Analyse today's environmental issues in the light of their societal implications. S·he will be able to make sense of the sometimes hidden stakes and power relations that are necessarily involved in any environmental issue. Overall, the student will be able to follow present-day events with a more critical eye.

Content
Each year, a group of students will take an in-depth look at a topical environmental issue in Flanders and/or the Netherlands. The news will be explored through a press review and the reading of scientific books or articles, but also by inviting experts to the course, making field visits and taking part in any conference held on the chosen topic during the teaching period. Finally, the group will 'pass on' this news to Belgium’s non-Dutch-speaking part by producing an online contribution (podcast, news feed on social networks, Wikipedia page or other).
Teaching methods
Regular workshops for discussion and pooling of student analyses. During the other weeks, meetings between the student and the teacher for a one-to-one discussion and follow-up.
Evaluation methods
Continuous evaluation of the student's involvement in the course throughout the semester, as well as a grade given for the final contribution placed online.
Other information
Research autonomy, a sense of initiative and the willingness to share results with the rest of the group are obvious assets for this course.
Bibliography
A déterminer chaque année, en fonction de l’actualité (sélectionnée).
To be determined each year, according to current (selected) events.
