Prerequisites
The LANGL1854 course or any other equivalent course (Speaking, Reading and Listening skills roughly corresponding to the B1 lower level of « the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages »).
Main themes
To fulfil these objectives, teaching activity will focus on the following:
  • Understanding in detail texts on subjects relating to general medical topics and his/her area of study (dentistry).
  • Understanding in detail audio-visual texts on general topics and topics relating to his/ her area of study.
  • Expressing oneself on a range of subjects relating to his or her area of study, participate in a conversation without preparation, express an opinion.
  • Building up of medical and scientific vocabulary
  • Reinforcement of specific grammatical structures
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The course aims to enable the student to improve his or her knowledge of grammar, general and specific vocabulary related to medicine in general and dentistry in particular, and to integrate reading and listening strategies required for pursuing the English training.
At the end of the module, the student should have reached level B1 (Upper) of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages in four areas:
1. reading comprehension
2. listening comprehension
3. speaking
4. language work (vocabulary and grammar).
 
Content
The course aims at developing the reading and listening skills of the students as well as improving command of the language (general and specific vocabulary, grammar).
  • Course based on different medical and scientific topics presented as reading text and videos (authentic material).
  • Students prepare the reading texts at home using reading strategies acquired.
  • Video input is analysed extensively and intensively.
  • Consolidation and improvement of grammar use and vocabulary accuracy.
  • Students make an oral presentation on a chosen medical topic, using material from different English-speaking sources.
In order to exempt students who may already have the required level, an exemption test is organized in week 1.
Teaching methods
  • 60-hour course - spread over one year
  • The course takes place face-to-face in small groups of students (maximum 25)
  • Video input is analysed extensively and intensively
  • Students prepare the reading texts at home using reading strategies acquired
  • Consolidation and improvement of grammar use and vocabulary accuracy
  • Students make an oral presentation on a chosen medical topic, using material from different English-speaking sources.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation is made up of different marks awarded to :
  • Attendance and active participation to the class (10%)
  • Oral presentations in class (10%)
  • 2 Vocabulary tests (20%)
  • Written examination at the end of term 1 (30%)
  • Written examination at the end of term 2 (30%)
      August/September Exam
  • 60 % for the Written exam  
  • 40% for the continuous assessment (the students whose marks for the continuous assessment are 10/20 or above will keep their marks).  The students who failed their continuous assessment will be assessed on the basis of a new presentation linked to the medical field/dentistry based on a 5-10 page article, which will count for 40% of the total marks. 
Attendance at this language course is required. In accordance with article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the Professor may propose to the jury that a student who has at least two unjustified absences per term for the course, be refused registration for the January, June or September session.
