Main themes
This course introduces students to methods of analysing images as a source of information, as a means of communication and mode of expression and as an object to be interpreted by the archaeologist and art historian.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- use the principal bibliographical tools, iconographic typologies and databases;
- implement a reflection on the status and functions of images;
- recognize the principal iconographic themes form mythology, the Bible and the life of saints;
- interpret the iconological meanings through the analysis of forms, composition, colours, materials, techniques'
 
Content
The principal methodologies applied to the iconographic and iconological analysis are presented and applied to concrete cases. The different types of visual discourses, iconographic genres and functions are also tackled. A special attention is devoted to the iconographic vocabulary and syntax.
Teaching methods
Combination of class lectures and interactions with the students.
Evaluation methods
Written exam conceived to evaluate the ability of the student to identify iconographic themes, the knowledge of what has been taught during the course and the application to special case studies.
