Basic knowledge of ancient Near Eastern and Mesopotamian societies (course LARKE1553)
Main themes
The course considers in-depth questions and specific problems of interpretation related to the reconstruction of the ways of life and ways of thinking of ancient societies in the Ancient Near East, especially in ancient Iran. More specifically, it will discuss topics such as Median-Achaemenid capitals, Median-Achaemenid cult sites, Elamite archaeology, etc. In addition, the theme of the destruction of cultural heritage in the Near East will also be discussed.
Content
This course intends to deepen the students’ archaeological knowledge of the Ancient Near East by discussing different themes ranging from cultural heritage preservation to maritime archaeology with a geographical focus on the Persian Gulf region.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into several modules, each focussing on a different theme (e.g. destruction of cultural heritage in the Middle East, Philby-Ryckmans-Lippens expedition, watercraft in the Persian Gulf, …) and region of the Middle East.
Evaluation methods
Each student will create a poster on one aspect of the Philby-Ryckmans-Lippens expedition and present his/her poster during the international workshop mid-November (40% of credits).
Written examen for the remaining modules of the course (60% of the credits).
“Artificial intelligence (AI) should be used in a responsible manner and following ethical and scientific standards. These standards state that a source should always be mentioned, as such one should reference properly to AI as a data source. The use of AI for assignments, in which it is explicitly forbidden (e.g. as tool to produce an entire paper), will be considered as cheating.”
