The following topics will be studied: the scientific method, assessing the scientific literature online, critical review of the literature, scientific writing.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of the course the successful student will be able to understand how science works, to conduct research into databases that cover movement sciences topics (ex : Pubmed, Scopus), to find and assess scientific literature and to apply this knowledge to the preparation of a thesis in physical education field.
 
Content
1) The scientific method: theoretical concepts are taught and illustrated through presentations made by professors and assistants working in various fields of movement sciences research.

2) Literature search and use of bibliographic databases in motor sciences : theoretical concepts and computer exercises on Pubmed and Scopus databases. This module is taught with the collaboration of the librarian.

3) Critical review of the literature and scientific writing: what distinguishes scientific literature from non-scientific literature? How are bibliographic references presented?
Teaching methods
Theoretical course in lecture halls and in computer rooms.
Theoretical concepts are illustrated through examples in scientific publications.
Evaluation methods
In this course, students are assessed in three ways:
  • Continuous assessment, including the submission of assignments and participation in online activities on Moodle (10% of the final grade). Students must complete 80% of the assignments and activities proposed on Moodle to pass this part of the assessment.
  • A quiz on bibliographic database research organized during the course (30% of the final grade).
  • A written examination organized during the course (60% of the final grade).
In the second session, the assessment of work submission and participation in Moodle activities acquired in the first session is maintained, and still represents 10% of the final grade. The remaining 90% is assessed by written examination.
